If you frequently use CBD you’re likely familiar with the different forms that it comes in. However, if you’re just beginning your CBD wellness journey, you may not know there are different types of CBD. It’s easy to become confused when words like tincture, full-spectrum, distillate, broad-spectrum, and isolate, begin to get thrown around. So let’s get right into it.

Deep Diving into the Different Types of CBD

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It is often derived from hemp but can also be derived from marijuana. All of our CBD products are hemp-derived. CBD comes in many different forms. A tincture just means a liquid form to be absorbed via oral administration. Any of our bottles with a graduated dropper top is considered a tincture.

Full-spectrum CBD oil is CBD oil with terpenes, chlorophyll, and other cannabinoids directly from the plant. It is the closest you can get to full plant extract and offers the most holistic benefits. The reason is the interaction between the variety of terpenes and cannabinoids in the tincture that creates what we call the entourage effect. Explore our selection of full-spectrum CBD tinctures on our website.

The different organic compounds (terpenes, CBD, CBG, CBN, THC, etc) stimulate the endocannabinoid system, a system of receptors, hormones, and enzymes, which is our body’s major regulatory system. Distillate is a form of CBD that is more like sap. It’s often around 80% CBD with terpenes and other cannabinoids make up the rest of the composition. Distillate can be full spectrum or broad spectrum and can be further refined to make pure CBD crystals.

CBD Without THC

Broad-spectrum is the same as full spectrum except it doesn’t have any THC. Broad-spectrum isn’t as beneficial because of the absence of THC which is arguably the most beneficial compound in cannabis tinctures. Isolate is a white powder that is often over 99% pure CBD crystals. This is the purest form of all types of CBD and contains no terpenes or other cannabinoids. Isolate can be used to make infused foods (see our CBD desserts recipe article), your own tinctures, or your own CBD products.

This is the most basic vocab and knowledge you’ll need when purchasing different CBD products. You’ll see a lot of these words reappear in future blog posts. This will form the foundation of your CBD and cannabis extract knowledge.
